Teeth Extractions

Simple extractions

Simple Extractions are performed when the tooth is above the gum line, teeth that are visible in the mouth, and can be removed with a lifter and forceps. The process and healing time are both quick. This may be used for a decayed tooth or a tooth that is broken but is still above the gum line. It’s also used to remove teeth when the root has died or if your teeth are crowded and removal is necessary to facilitate orthodontic treatment.

Surgical extractions

A surgical extraction requires an incision into the gum to get to the tooth. This type of extraction is necessary if your tooth has broken below the gum line or if it is multiple pieces and some are stuck beneath the gums. A surgical extraction is also necessary for impacted teeth that are partially or completely covered by gum tissue. Frequently, the tooth may be split into multiple pieces to facilitate its removal.

Wisdom teeth extractions

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth — the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom.

If a wisdom tooth doesn’t have room to grow (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other dental problems, you’ll likely need to have it pulled. Wisdom tooth extraction may be done by a dentist or an oral surgeon. Some dentists and oral surgeons recommend wisdom tooth extraction even if impacted teeth aren’t causing problems, as a preventive measure against potential future problems.
